Advances on the vitamin D and ocular disease

Abstract:

Vitamin D is a steroid hormone that has widespread role in human physiology, not only in the maintenance of calcium homeostasis but also in immunomodulation, cellular differentiation, and proliferation. The role of vitamin D in ocular surface conditions such as dry eye disease, diabetic retinopathy, and thyroid eye disease has received widespread and well deserved attention. It has been demonstrated that vitamin D has associated with eye diseases including myopia, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), glaucoma, DR, dry eye, thyroid related eye diseases, uveitis, retinoblastoma, and cataracts. The correlation between vitamin D and eye diseases from the perspective of vitamin D metabolism was reviewed, aiming to provide new ideas for the diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases.
