Research progress of the effect of estrogen deficiency on the lacrimal gland

Abstract:

Estrogen is essential for maintaining the structure and function of lacrimal gland. Estrogen deficiency can adversely affect the lacrimal glands, which can cause some lacrimal autoimmune diseases. The main pathological characteristics of lacrimal autoimmune diseases are acinar cell apoptosis and inflammatory cell infiltration. Estrogen plays a great role in anti-apoptosis, which can protect the lacrimal gland cells from apoptotic programmed death. During perimenopausal period, estrogen deficiency will increase the number of apoptotic cells in female. The product produced after apoptosis process, as the autologous antigen, can activate the plasmacytoid dendritic cells (PDC) that promote inflammatory cell to infiltrate and secrete cytokines, which can cause the autoimmune diseases.
