Abstract:
Objective The aim of this study was to analyze the performance of Beijing Science and Technology New Star project on young scholars in ophthalmology.
Methods From 1993 to 2018, the number and proportion of all "Science and Technology New Star" in Beijing, ophthalmology major, Beijing Tongren Eye Cener, Beijing Tongren Hospital affiliated to Capital Medical University, and Beijing Institute of Ophthalmology were searched in the database of Beijing Science and Technology New Star project. Meanwhile, scholars′ age, professional title, degree, tutor qualification, as well as their scientific research performance from 2017 to 2019 were searched in the personnel list of Beijing Institute of Ophthalmology; there are six "Science and Technology New Star" at work in Beijing Institute of Ophthalmology. The qualification for graduate supervisor and their scientific research achievements (from 2017 to 2019) include the distribution of papers published (American Science Citation Index and Chinese science and technology core journals), level (impact factor), research type (basic, application basis), research direction, funded vertical projects were collected in the scientific research management database of Beijing Tongren Hospital affiliated to Capital Medical University. The indices were compared with the description in the list.
Results From 1993 to 2018, Beijing Science and Technology New Star project had hold for 26 sessions, and there were 2393 scholars selected. Among of them, 654 scholars worked at medicine department or institute, accouting for 27.3%; 52 scholars worked at Beijing Tongren Hospital affiliated to Capital Medical University, ranked 6th among the selected medical institutions. There were 31 scholars in ophthalmology. Among of them, 22 scholars worked at Beijing Tongren Eye Cener, Beijing Tongren Hospital affiliated to Capital Medical University. Among them, there were 11 stars in Beijing Institute of Ophthalmology, and 6 scholars at work. There were 2 scholars with master degree (have obtained doctoral degree) and 4 scholars with doctoral degree among of 6 candidates of Beijing ophthalmology Research Institute. At present, they have the senior title. One scholar has the qualification for doctoral graduate supervisor and graduate supervisor, respectively. From 2017 to 2019, 6 stars published 35 academic papers, of which 26 were included in American Science Citation Index with an average influence factor of more than 3, and 9 academic papers in Chinese Journal series and (or) Chinese science and technology core journals, and 8 academic papers in Lancet by co-authors, and 3 treatises in English. They all gained the support from provincial and ministerial level or above scientific research projects, a total of 18 projects; at or above the provincial and ministerial level, a total of 3 awards. Among them, there were 2 scholars have become director.
Conclusions Beijing Science and Technology New Star project is the largest amount of funding for the development of young scholars in ophthalmology. After the end of the training period, Beijing Science and Technology New Star project has shown strong innovation ability and achieved excellent innovation results with candidates′ efforts and the support of research institutes. At the same time, some problems have arisen, such as the low proportion of basic research, the difficulty of team building and so on.
