The rational application of vitreous surgery in infant congenital cataract surgery

Abstract:

Cataract is one of the major blinding eye diseases in children. Infancy is a critical stage of visual development. During this period, severe opacity of the lens leads to the development of deprivation amblyopia. So the early diagnosis and early treatment are very important for improving long-term visual function in those congenital cataract children. Because of the rapid changes in the structure of the eye in children, especially in infancy, cataract surgery is distinct from those of the adults. At present, the introduce of vitrectomy in the surgery of congenital cataract could improve the effect in those cataract surgeries and avoid possible complications. Therefore, the authors reviewed the timing of operation, surgical procedures and the choice of surgical incisions for the use of vitreous surgery in the treatment of congenital cataract in infants.
