16S ribosomal ribonucleic acid (16S rRNA) genome sequencing and second-generation sequencing (NGS) technology have promoted the research in the field of human microbiome, which have changed the understanding of the relationship between human health and microorganisms for researchers. Recently, the research on the relationship between eye microbiome and eye health, as a branch, has also become a new research field. It has demonstrated that eye diseases were not only related to the changes of eye surface microbiome, but also the imbalance of intestinal and oral microecology. Understanding the role of microbiota in eye diseases, especially for related infectious inflammation, has become the key to accurate diagnosis and treatment of such diseases. However, it was destined to become a challenging mission because of the diverse and complex characteristics of microbiota, coupled with the special structure of ocular tissue. So far, although the industry′s understanding of its association mechanism remains to develope, authors believe that the continuous progress in this field will be helpful to reshape the industry of the diagnosis and treatment for many ophthalmic diseases.
